Caring about your appearance makes you a bad Feminist

“At the end of the day, whether you do or don’t care about how you look the fact that you are in the corner for feminism is a huge benefit to moving elements forward to achieving equal pay for females in the workplace. Whether you do that with or without your favourite nude lipstick is irrelevant”

Putting on makeup of a weekday or putting thought into what you wearing doesn’t make you a bad feminist despite what some will lead you to believe. This, in my opinion, sits alongside the point of view that having an interest in these topics makes you thick in it’s absurd nature.

Let’s not forget that you can be a male or female and call yourself a feminist however I think that being called a ‘bad‘ feminist is a label given exclusively to female feminists.

Finding joy in putting on makeup of a morning doesn’t take away from the fact that you are passionate about equal pay for women and men. It doesn’t change the fact that you are of the belief that body autonomy is a basic human right that females should hold. There seems to be a wide spread assumption that because you enjoy things that enhance your appearance or that are considered to be a hobby that is “silly” that you can possibly think about having other interests. It is tarring people with a brush rather than actually remembering that people have more than one dimension, are made up of a whole host of likes and interests with a good few dislikes thrown in for good measure.

Assuming that someone that enjoys taking care of their appreance is a bad feminist is not only, in my opinion, one sided it is also saying that in order to be a good feminist then you must make a consious effort to not care about your appereance. At the end of the day, whether you do or don’t care about how you look the fact that you are in the corner for feminism is a huge benefit to moving elements forward to achieving equal pay for females in the workplace. Whether you do that with or without your favourite nude lipstick is irrelevant. To me, being able to express myself via make up is fun. You can represent yourself as who you want to be for that day, a slick of red lisptick or a spray of your favourite perfume. It is easy to instantly pick yourself up and make yourself feel great.
